I tried to disable mine. Ended up disabling the fuel pump. Whoops. ABS and The Fuel Pump both use a 20amp fuse, there was only one 20 amp fuse in the fuse box. I obviously put it back. But does anybody know how to disable ABS in a 1993 Ranger? I only have ABS in the rear (the drive wheels) and they are drums, so when it kicks in I lose steering. TBH if I could only get ABS in this configuration, I’d rather do without.
Have a drifting V8 Ranger for your time:
This thing is so awesome, Someday I hope for my truck to be able to do that while sounding that good

Remove, or cut wires to, wheel speed sensors.
Logic:
Some GM's came with a similar setup where the PCM fuse and ABS fure were the same. Wheel Speed Sensors were a problem part. When they stopped working ABS stopped working, and the only issue was a big orange light on the dash. Remove bulb.

See if you can find someone with the EDW on the forums. Sounds like there is a wrong sized fused somewhere in there.

So you want to disable a safety feature on your daily driver that you can’t quickly or easily reenable... Doesn’t sound like an excellent idea to me...
It’s one thing if it’s a button that you can use to easily toggle the settings. It’s another when you’re pulling a fuse.

huh, did not know 2wd ABS was a thing. Googling reveals otherwise.
You can always remove the box that does the regulating

I don’t understand why you’d lose your steering by maintaining traction at the back unless you mean that the fronts lock first. Killing ABS won’t fix that, and you really want the fronts to lock first anyway. If you lose steering, you need to not brake as hard and learn where the threshold is.

The rear brakes dont lock up but the front does, thats why I lose steering

Only ABS on the rear? That doesn’t make sense to me at all.

And how will killing ABS change that?

It will make controlling the vehicle easier because all 4 wheels will behave the same way in the same conditions

That's exactly what will happen. Early systems are pretty aggressive while not being very intelligent, which basically results in almost no braking force. That means the fronts have to have more force applied=locked fronts.

No it won’t. Leave it alone. Your fronts will lock first anyway, or should. This is entirely your driving, not your machine.

They’re aggressive, but they still won’t kick in until it senses a lock and the fronts should (would) lock first anyway, meaning he needs to lift and find the threshold again.

It would likely just make all your wheels lock, which wouldn't really help your steering.

If the "safety feature" is not working towards improved safety, there's nothing wrong with disabling it. You give me an idea though. I sugested cutting the wheel speed sensors out—now I think he should reroute the wheel speed sensor wires through a switch on the dash.

No but it would make my truck more predictable. And ABS in that configuration is pretty useless anyway

Pickup. Light rear=back locks first, esp. if not set up properly or not maintained, which by the posts when he first got it, it hadn't really been well maintained.

Your truck is more predictable when you know your back end won’t kick out because it has ABS, leaving you to concentrate on the front end. Unless your brake balance is spot on you won’t be locking all 4 unless you hammer the anchors.

If not properly maintained, maybe. I doubt that Ford would have let it leave the factory with the partitioning valve set up to let the back lock first. That would be like hitting the e-brake on lock-ups. I’m not a fan of the understeer over oversteer setups in modern alignments and suspension setups, but this is absolutely a case where you want understeer instead of oversteer.

find the plug on the ABS pump under the hood and pull it. done. Light might come on but it will anyway if it is disabled

Neither can I, really, but shit happens. and if shit didn't happen after 22 year it would be quite surprising.
Regardless, the question is can the rear ABS be felt working? If it can, kill the ABS system. If it can't, there's something else messed up.

But it's a truck...it's not like it has ever been predictable, regardless of the ABS configuration

You can always feel it when ABS kicks in no matter how advanced the system is. This is not a problem.

You shouldn’t be driving a ranger fast enough to need abs. Unless you have a death wish then by all means. Just don’t kill someone else.

Like others have said. Break the system. Which is why I haven’t had ABS for years. I have 4 wheel ABS and I messed a sensor up on the front right. I don’t remember what me and my dad were doing, but it’s borked. If the light comes on your dash, congrats, you have no ABS.

In that case, your issue is probably much better solved with better tires/driving slower :P

That wasn't what I meant. My point was, is he certain the ABS is kicking in, or is there something wrong with the brake system? If the ABS kicks in and then the fronts lock, then he is absolutely correct that the ABS is screwing him.
